Taiwan Instrument Research Institute (TIRI), located in the Hsinchu Science Park, is part of Taiwan's Instrument Technology Research Institute, dedicated to the application and promotion of advanced technologies in various industries.
During the implementation of the National Science and Technology Council's program, TIRI faced challenges related to tool wear and its impact on production efficiency and cost control. Traditionally, metal part manufacturing and processing plants utilize cutting machines; however, real-time monitoring and management of tool wear has posed a significant technical challenge. Failing to detect tool wear promptly can lead to an increase in defective products during the production process, resulting in material waste and inefficient use of production time, ultimately raising costs and reducing efficiency.
To address this issue, TIRI collaborated with MiTAC to develop the MiSeeR Cutter Abrasion Monitoring System. This system employs AIoT technology, utilizing sensors installed on tools and grinding equipment to monitor tool wear and health status in real-time. By analyzing sensor data through AI algorithms, the system can predict the remaining useful life of tools and recommend replacements when necessary.
MiTAC assisted TIRI in deploying high-performance AI servers for real-time processing and analysis of the vast amounts of data collected from various sensors. This data encompasses not only the wear status of tools and grinding wheels but also the operational status and efficiency of the machinery. The system integrates this data through a monitoring platform, providing comprehensive analysis and evaluation of machine status, enabling managers to make timely scheduling decisions and minimizing downtime due to tool wear-related risks.
The successful implementation of MiSeeR Cutter Abrasion Monitoring System has led to significant benefits for TIRI. Specifically, the system has extended the lifespan of tools and grinding wheels, achieving an average increase of 10% in usage hours. This not only reduces the cost of tool replacements but also decreases downtime in the production process, enhancing manufacturing efficiency and product quality, thereby strengthening the Instrumentation Center's competitiveness in the industry.
Through the intelligent solutions provided by MiTAC, TIRI has successfully overcome the challenges of tool wear management, achieving a win-win situation in production efficiency and cost control. This case stands as a model of technological innovation and offers a successful reference for other related industries.
